Austria's assembled know-how in the development and production of diesel engines will be brought together in a newly established "World Center of Excellence." The alliance unites Germany's world-class auto manufacturer BMW - which for years has developed all its diesel engines in Steyr, Upper Austria - and AVL List, the world's largest independent engine research and development institute, known especially for its pioneering development work in direct injection systems for diesel aggregates.

Nearly one of three newly registered cars in Europe is equipped by diesel - one of two in Austria - and the trend is headed upwards. The alliance's goal is to meet this rapidly rising demand through the production of an unbranded diesel engine for the international automotive industry.

The new diesel center joins the "Automotive Cluster Styria" (ACS) and the Automotive Technology Cluster as the third recent development project strengthening Austria's technological position in this critical sector.
