Nokia, the Finnish telecommunications giant, has established its headquarters for Austria in Eisenstadt. The project also includes the construction of a technical service center for complete telecommunications networks, as well as a first for Europe: the erection of a Site Development Competence Center for the professional and efficient placement of transmission towers for mobile telephone networks.

In all, Nokia is investing around ATS 80 million (US$6.5 million) in this Technology Center Eisenstadt for specialized telecommunications equipment. Nokia plans to expand its workforce in Eisenstadt from 150 in summer 1998 to more than 200 high-tech positions in the long run.

Nokia is the largest producer of digital mobile telephones and is emerging as the leader in wireless data terminals and signal transmission systems. The concern is also assuming a position among the top performers in stationary high-speed networks, network access technologies and interactive multimedia communications. Worldwide, Nokia employs more than 36,000 workers, with 1996 revenues of just over ATS 93 billion (US$7.25 billion).
