Use of Smart Meters by Utility Companies

The Privacy Commissioner has received several enquiries from the public concerning the privacy implications of smart meters. Presently, there are approximately 1.2 million homes and businesses installed with a smart meter. The data collected from the smart meters may show whether people are at home and when certain types of high energy appliances are used.

The Commissioner considers that power companies need to take "additional care in how they look after information, and tell consumers how it will be used." Further, power companies need to have "strong security standards to ensure information is transmitted safely online".
