May 16, 2013 (New York) – Proskauer Rose LLP has acted as counsel to Jersey City Medical Center (JCMC), a not-for-profit hospital that is part of Liberty Health System, in the negotiation of its agreement to become part of the Barnabas Health system. The merger of Liberty and JCMC with Barnabas is expected to close later in 2013, subject to obtaining required federal and state regulatory approval.
"The combination is part and parcel of a broader trend of horizontal and vertical integration of health care services providers spurred by the Affordable Care Act," said Richard Zall, Proskauer Partner and Chair of its Health Care Department, who led the deal. "Size and access to capital will be a key differentiator as companies seek economies of scale and new technologies to drive greater efficiencies in costs and patient care."
Jersey Medical Center, a 316-bed teaching hospital, is the largest healthcare services provider in Hudson County, New Jersey, with more than 18,000 admissions and 80,000 emergency room visits per year. Barnabas Health, which includes Clara Maass Medical Center, Saint Barnabas Medical Center and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, among others across the state, is the largest not-for-profit integrated health care delivery system in New Jersey and one of the largest nationally.
