We have received reports that the " APL AUSTRIA ", a 2007 built container vessel flying the Liberian flag, has caught fire. The vessel is presently at Port Elizabeth and two tugs are fighting the fire.

The vessel runs regularly between Korea, China, Malaysia, Singapore and African ports, however by virtue of the nature of the container trade cargo will be to/from many ports. The vessel has a capacity of approximately 6,350 TEU.

Some crew have been evacuated. The vessel is receiving professional assistance. A video is available here –

Whether a salvage claim is raised or not, it is in any case very likely that General Average will be declared.
