The Federal Government will introduce its clean energy legislative package into Parliament today.  Various separate bills will be introduced into the House of Representatives, including the Clean Energy Bill, which is the main piece of legislation that will establish Australia's proposed carbon price mechanism.  Other bills comprising the package include legislation to set up a Clean Energy Regulator and a Climate Change Authority that will act as an independent review body, as well as laws relating to fuel tax arrangements.

Stakeholder engagement has already been undertaken and submissions closed on 22 August 2011.  After the bills are introduced today, debate will commence and a vote is expected to take place during Parliament's October sitting.  The legislative package will give effect to the Government's Securing Australia's Energy Future – the Australian Government's Climate Change Plan (Clean Energy Plan).  It will have significant effects on the Australian economy and on Australian and overseas businesses.  To find out more about the Clean Energy Plan and its implications for business, please read our publication Australia's clean energy future: legal and commercial implications for business
