A pan-jurisdiction team of lawyers from Carey Olsen has worked collaboratively with international law firm DLA Piper to produce the DLA Piper Data Protection Laws of the World Handbook.

The guide is a handy reference tool for use by clients and contains an overview of the law in a number of key jurisdictions worldwide. Carey Olsen was selected by DLA Piper to submit chapters covering the British Virgin Islands (BVI), Cayman, Guernsey and Jersey, having worked with the firm on a number of similar projects in the past. Topics covered in the guide include the registration process for data controllers, potential sanctions, the principles according to which data should be handled and electronic marketing and privacy issues.

The release of the guide is timed to coincide with Data Privacy Day, an international initiative to educate people and businesses to better protect their privacy and control their digital footprint. It is celebrated annually on 28 January, which marks the date when Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty dealing with data protection and privacy, was signed. Data flows freely and in increasing volumes and it is important that businesses and individuals remain vigilant as to the steps necessary to protect their data. The guide is designed to help in the education process and to give easy access to summaries of applicable laws to assist clients to manage their digital portfolios.

Contributors from Carey Olsen included Guernsey senior associate Richard Field, BVI partner Clinton Hempel and senior associate Alan Hughes, Cayman partner Nick Bullmore and associate Alistair Russell and Jersey of counsel Huw Thomas.
