The State has announced its waste and recycling strategy which includes the introduction of the previously scrapped waste levy, following the recommendations and findings by Justice Peter Lyons QC in the investigation into the disposal of interstate waste in Queensland.

Details on the waste and recycling strategy and the waste levy, including the commencement of the scheme, have yet to be determined by the State. It is expected that the introduction of the waste levy will be above $35 per tonne (being the waste levy as at 2011).

The State will develop its waste and recycling strategy in consultation with local governments, the Local Government Association of Queensland and a Stakeholders Advisory Group which is to be established. A draft terms sheet for the Stakeholders Advisory Group has now been released by the State.
