The vast majority of Canada's deaths due to COVID-19 have been in long-term care facilities. In an effort to support these facilities in Ontario, the military was called in to assist, and what they found has been set out in a report presented to the Ontario government. The report includes findings that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described as "deeply disturbing", and alleges elder abuse involving inadequate nutrition, seniors being left in soiled garments, the presence of cockroaches, flies, and rotten food, and overwhelmed and aggressive staff members.
Although the report is indeed troubling, elder law advocates are hopeful that the findings may pave the way to improve care for our seniors. For advice on how to access support and assistance for yourself or someone you care about, contact a member of our Elder Law Practice Group.
