As we previously reported, the Federal Government announced last year that it would introduce legislation to increase the amount of liability coverage required for nuclear plant operators and offshore oil and gas production.

The legislation implementing these changes, the Energy Safety and Security Act, was introduced in the House of Commons on January 30.

The government also stated in last year's announcement that the regulations regarding pipelines under federal jurisdiction would also be revamped to require (among other things) pipeline operators to have the resources to respond to an emergency and to require a minimum of $1b in financial capacity.  These revisions have not yet been introduced.
