Individuals seeking asylum in Canada from Mexico has been consistently rising since Trump has taken over one of the most powerful positions in the world today.

In an article by The Huffington Post, it has been reported that Mexicans are looking to Canada for asylum.

With President Donald Trump cracking down on undocumented individuals in the United States, many Mexicans looking for a better life have now begun to look to Canada. The Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) has reported that the month of March has recorded the highest number of claims in 2017:

  • March: 110 claims
  • February: 85 claims
  • January: 71 claims

Compared to 2016, this is a significant increase – 2016 only saw 241 claims over 12 months.

A convincing cause for this increase is most likely the lift on the requirement for Mexicans to get a visa before travelling to Canada. This was done last December, and an increase in claims was forecast.

The reason for the visa requirement was because of an increase in asylum seekers in 2009, but this move caused diplomatic issues between the two.

However, with the continuous anti-Mexican attitude Donald Trump originally developed during his campaigning that he continues to stand by while in office, there could be many more claims being submitted to Canada than we think. Not only have claims increased, but flights between Canada and Mexico have as well, with Mexicans claiming asylum mostly in Vancouver's airport.

When Canada decided to lift the visa requirement, they had told Mexico that if the claims reach a certain point (they have not released the number) that the visa requirement will be reinstated. It is remained to be seen if Canada will do this when and if the claims reach that point, as they could reverse the work they have done to develop a better standing relationship with Mexico.
