On June 8, 2018, the Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced a Student Direct Stream for students applying for a study permit from China, India, Vietnam, and the Philippines. While similar programs have already been in place for these four countries, the Student Direct Stream merges these programs to ensure consistency and faster processing times.

To qualify for the Student Direct Stream, applicants from these four countries need to meet additional requirements, including more advanced language skills than required under the regular study permit application. Applicants who do not qualify can still apply through the regular study permit application.

IRCC has also announced that they are working on expanding the Student Direct Stream to countries in Africa, including Kenya and Senegal.
