Today, the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Corporation (the "AGLC") announced the first thirteen licensed producers (LPs) selected to supply cannabis to Alberta's recreational market come fall. The AGLC's press release, which stated that "Alberta will be ready to roll come October 17", indicated that the selected LPs were chosen from a pool of 31 proponents who responded to the province's "Expression of Interest", which closed in February.

The thirteen successful LPs who have signed supply deals with the Province are:

  • 7 Acres/The Supreme Cannabis Company;
  • ABCann Global;
  • Aphria Inc.;
  • Aurora;
  • CannTrust;
  • Canopy Growth;
  • Emblem Cannabis;
  • Maricann Group Inc.;
  • MedReleaf Corp.;
  • Organigram;
  • Starseed Medicinal Inc.;
  • UP Cannabis Inc.; and
  • Weed MD.

The Province has indicated that this does not make up a final list of LPs that they may engage for supply, in fact, they have stated an objective to seek out and engage additional LPs, especially those based in Alberta. The list as is, only has one Albertan LP, Aurora. The remainder of the list is made up of 11 Ontario-based LPs, plus Organigram whose facility is based out of New Brunswick. Many of the Ontari0-based LPs see Alberta as a major market.

In late March, it was announced that Alberta's online sales, which will be exclusively offered through Alberta Cannabis , will be developed and run by OnX Enterprise Solutions. Since then, the AGLC has been hard at work selecting the "right partners" to ensure cannabis is supplied to the province in a "safe and responsible manner while continuing to offer choices Albertans can trust." Private storefront applications are still being accepted by the Province on a rolling basis.
