Bermuda: Praise For Carey Olsen's Caribbean Offices In Chambers Global
Last Updated: 19 February 2019

Fourteen lawyers from Carey Olsen's offices in Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and the Cayman Islands have been recognised in the 2019 edition of Chambers Global, one of the most respected global legal directories which ranks law firms and their lawyers based purely on client feedback.

Carey Olsen Bermuda has entered the Chambers Global rankings after only one year of operation, with five of its lawyers also ranked. The firm's dispute resolution practice was praised for its responsiveness and for 'always providing sound, pragmatic advice'.

Keith Robinson, partner and head of the trusts practice at Carey Olsen Bermuda, is ranked across three categories – dispute resolution, international private client: contentious and international private client: offshore. He is described by commentators as 'a star – the best trusts litigator on the island' and top of everyone's list. A London private client lawyer added that Keith is 'probably one of the best if not the best trust lawyer in Bermuda at the moment'.

Managing partner Michael Hanson is recognised for his handling of cross jurisdictional disputes, with a recognised specialism in employment matters. Michael is praised by one client for his 'understanding of how business works, which helps mitigate risk and assists our business in achieving its objectives'. Mary Ward, partner and head of the firm's corporate practice, is praised for her 'technical abilities' and 'strong client relationships' and as someone who 'maintains a solid reputation for corporate matters in the insurance sector'.

Counsel Gavin Woods and Henry Tucker are also featured. Sources noted Gavin's 'rising profile and growing reputation' and praised him for his expertise in insurance-linked securities and the licensing of new insurance entities, while Henry was praised for being 'client-centric in every aspect of his legal practice'.

Carey Olsen's Cayman Islands team was promoted in the dispute resolution category of the rankings to Band 2 and described by clients as 'technically strong, commercial and responsive'. Jan Golaszewski, who leads the dispute resolution team in the Cayman Islands, is considered 'technically strong and commercial', while fellow practice partner Sam Dawson is appreciated by sources for his 'thorough knowledge of Cayman Islands law and familiarity with procedure in the Grand Court'. Denis Olarou, an associate in the Cayman Islands dispute resolution team, features as an 'associate to watch' with peers highlighting him as 'a very smart lawyer'.

Clients praise the Cayman Islands corporate and finance team for its 'amazingly smart' lawyers, who 'understand the needs of a client' and provide a high level of support. Similarly, sources describe the investment funds practice as 'strong in all areas and very responsive and practical in their advice'. Partner Jarrod Farley is considered an 'excellent' funds counsel who is 'practical, business-oriented and mindful of real-world practicalities', while partner Nick Bullmore is said to be very 'knowledgeable about what's going on' in the investment funds space, and a 'practical and commercial' adviser to his clients. Interviewees considered partner Richard Munden 'very strong' on the finance side, especially in regard to his 'high-quality' practice in aircraft finance.

London-based partner Jasmine Amaria is also recognised for her Cayman Islands investment funds expertise. She is 'very efficient, knowledgeable and comes back promptly', according to clients, who also note that 'she can field a wide range of queries and has a far-reaching understanding of many aspects of international law'.

Carey Olsen's BVI dispute resolution and litigation group is described by clients as 'technically strong, commercial and responsive', with sources also noting its impressive stature and for the fact it's 'very busy and involved in a lot of matters'. Partner Ben Mays remains one of my most trusted, go-to advisers', according to one source, and someone who is 'consistently sharp and timely'. The BVI corporate team is 'highly proficient' and 'responsive to client needs and can be relied upon to provide practical solutions'. Clinton Hempel, BVI managing partner and head of the corporate practice, is valued for his 'very high-quality advice'.

'Carey Olsen Bermuda' is the trading name for Michael Hanson, a barrister and attorney, carrying on Bermuda legal services. The use of the title 'Partner' is merely to denote seniority. Services are provided on the basis of our current terms of business.
