The Department of Merchant Shipping recently issued a reminder to registered owners, bareboat charterers, managers and representatives of Cyprus-flagged ships regarding the renewal of civil liability certificates under:

  • the International Convention on Civil Liability for Bunker Oil Pollution Damage;
  • the Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks;
  • the Athens Convention relating to the Carriage of Passengers and their Luggage by Sea 1974; and
  • the EU Passenger Liability Regulation (391/2009).

The expiry date for most existing certificates is February 20 2018 and there has been an unprecedented delay in the submission of renewal applications this year. The Department of Merchant Shipping therefore urges parties that require a renewal to apply without further delay in order to ensure that renewal takes place before the deadline, particularly as the day before the deadline is a public holiday in Cyprus. Applications will be processed on a first come, first served basis.
