Progressing gender parity in the workplace is a mission close to Fiona Hurley's heart. In her leadership role at TMF Jersey, she strives to uphold equal opportunities in her team.

Fiona Hurley first joined TMF Group in 2016 as the Director of Client Services  based in the Jersey office. With her leadership of client teams and active participation on the local Board, Fiona saw the Jersey office come out of its five-year remediation program in just three years, and get itself into the right shape to move forward.

Rising to take on a global career challenge, Fiona progressed to Compliance Program Director earlier this year. It's a role that enables her to oversee TMF Group as a whole. "I am really enjoying my new challenge, she shared. "The new role involves working on a number of key compliance projects identified for delivery in 2019. These will impact our offices across the globe, it's a big change from being solely Jersey-focused to looking at the wider TMF Group."

While facing new challenges on a global scale can be daunting, Fiona finds motivation in overcoming these challenges, "I like a challenge and I like to feel that I am adding value. These are my main motivators – if something captures my interest, I am committed to seeing it through successfully."

But challenges in the workplace can come outside of one's role. As an experienced leader, Fiona has seen first-hand the many barriers and obstacles faced by women in business. "I have faced pay inequality, breaking the glass ceiling as I make my way up, I have also persevered through the preferential treatment given to men for promotions" Fiona explained. "I am happy to say that most of this type of discrimination is in the past for me now, but just because I no longer face these challenges in my environment it doesn't mean that women out there aren't still trying to fight them today."

Progressing gender parity in the workplace is a mission close to her heart. Being in a leadership role, Fiona strives to uphold equal opportunities in her team. "I have always treated everyone equally when it comes to career progression and benefits. I encourage women (and men) to progress their careers but for me, it is important that this is not at the expense of their private lives. I'm mindful that many are juggling essentially two jobs; having a career and running a home. I have always encouraged both men and women to spend time with their families and if they have children, not to miss those important events in their lives."

Further to this cause, Fiona is also a vocal member of an internal women's network at TMF Group. The network discusses ideas and provides a platform for both men and women to collectively spearhead grassroot initiatives that will make a difference in progressing gender parity in the organisation.

Her passion and commitment as an exemplary leader – especially in female empowerment and progressing gender parity – did not go unnoticed, as Fiona was recently nominated and then shortlisted for the Citywealth Powerwomen Awards 2019 for a category in 'Woman of the Year' for large organisations. The awards spotlight individuals and companies who support caregiving responsibilities, female leadership and celebrate diversity.

On what 'nuggets of wisdom' she would provide to women, Fiona reiterates the importance of perseverance. "Don't give up on what matters to you, keep pursuing your dreams. Don't try to fight every battle as it will exhaust you, but stand for what truly matters."
