Malaysian Police recently raided and closed down a factory producing amongst other things imitation Panadol pills and imitation Eye-Mo eyedrops.

Apart from seizing the imitation pills and eyedrops, the police also confiscated other imitation medicines and drinks, which the police described as being produced under very unhygienic conditions.

It appears that the operators of the factory had been using a wholesale business as a front for their illegal activities. A factory director, an illegal Indonesian immigrant worker and a sundries shopowner have been arrested. Police believe that the factory operators were part of a syndicate and the raid followed an earlier successful operation against a wholesale sundry shop.

The police are meeting with the authorised distributors of both Panadol and Eye-Mo to discuss what further security measures can be undertaken to help identify the genuine products from the imitations.

The factory operators could be charged under the Poisons Act.
