On 29 March 2017, Prime Minister Theresa May triggered Article 50, formally commencing the process that will lead to Great Britain leaving the European Union.

A snap general election was called by PM Theresa May which took place on 8 June 2017. The election resulted in a hung parliament, with the Conservatives losing their majority and seeking to form a minority government with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). A scaled down Queen's Speech was then presented on 21 June, with the parties debating its contents with a view to a government being formed.

The Conservatives and DUP formalised their agreement on 26 June after 18 days of negotiations between the parties, and a minority government is now in place.
