On 30 March 2010, the European Commission adopted the 13th update of the list of airlines banned in the European Union. Since the adoption of the first list on 22 March 2006, updates have been issued with reliable regularity at six monthly intervals. By the latest update:
- the Commission imposes a ban on the operations of Sudanese air carriers. The Commission cites "persistent non-compliance with international standards in the area of oversight" on the part of the Civil Aviation Authority of Sudan;
- a ban is imposed on operations of all air carriers licensed in the Philippines. At the same time, the Commission acknowledges recent efforts by the authorities there to reform the civil aviation system and the steps taken to address certain safety deficiencies previously reported both by ICAO and the FAA;
- restrictions previously placed on Air Koryo (licensed in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea) and on the operations of TAAG (Angola) are partially lifted, subject to conditions; and
- the air safety committee has concluded unanimously to restrict air operations of Iran
Air to the EU. Only certain aircraft will be permitted to be operated by the carrier to and/or from Europe.
With this latest update, all carriers from 17 specified countries (278 carriers in total) are currently banned from operations in European airspace
