We spoke to Haran Gill, a Consultant in our Business Tax team, on what makes Tax such a rewarding place to develop your career – and why it's even better in Reading, Berkshire. Here's his story...

How and when did you join Deloitte?

I studied Accounting and Finance at the University of Birmingham, before going on to complete the Graduate Diploma in Law and the Legal Practice Course at BPP Law School. After graduating, I joined the Deloitte graduate scheme in September 2012.

Why did you join Deloitte in Reading?

Deloitte had an established brand and ranked highly in terms of job satisfaction and work/life balance in many surveys. I was happy to discover that it's all true. Since joining Deloitte, I've met a very diverse group of people. With so many different business units there's someone from every walk of life in Deloitte. I've also been able to travel all over the world, from international client proposals to long term secondments. I really have experienced the investment the firm has made in my development through training and qualifications.

What's your role at Deloitte?

I'm a corporation tax consultant within Tax Management Consultancy (TMC). I work full time, however I used the 'time out' option for three months after I qualified for my ACA. Having also recently had a baby, the firm has been great with working from home when needed.

What are the three main reasons you love your job?

The breadth and depth of work is fantastic. I'm surrounded by a great team in Reading. And the location of the Reading office is right by Forbury Park where we spend our lunches, and easily commutable too.

How would you best describe your business area within Deloitte?

TMC within Business Tax is at the heart of our corporation tax practice. We're often the first port of call for a whole host of issues clients may be facing around anything from compliance to reporting. We can also identify other areas where we can help, and bring in other teams from across Deloitte.

What could a job in tax at Deloitte do for your career?

I've worked on high profile clients at Deloitte, as we have a number of FTSE 100 clients come to us here in Reading. I was also given a good level of responsibility early on. I believe my development as a tax consultant is much faster and more well-rounded than if I'd been elsewhere. For example, one of the most exciting projects I've worked on is exploring how our compliance operating model should evolve. With the rapid changes in technology and the aim to make our compliance and reporting practices the absolute best, I was seconded out to India to work in Deloitte's centre of excellence.

What do you think is the main barrier to joining tax in Deloitte?

There's a perception that there's no work/life balance at Deloitte, that the Reading office is small and that there won't be a good range of work. When in fact, Reading has the biggest corporation tax practice outside of London for Deloitte and punches well above its weight in terms of high profile clients.

What drives you to make an impact in your personal life?

As someone that likes to keep fit and really push my limits, boxing really appeals to me and I train as much as I can (Anthony Joshua watch out!). Outside of work and sports, I love travelling all over the world. Iceland and Goa have to be my two favourite spots.

What's been the most interesting change in tax recently?

With the landscape of corporation tax changing with new legislation at a rapid rate, coupled with an increased focus by regulators on compliance and risk management, clients often look to us to lead their strategy in this area. There have also been huge changes in tax law emerging over the last few years, as well as an increased media spotlight on corporation tax. This has seen more and more members of our team becoming specialists in certain areas of tax law. However, above all, I'd say that technology and innovation are the biggest factors that will change the way our clients work – and the way we work.
