WASHINGTON, D.C.—Small businesses lose more than $4.7 billion annually to toll pumping, an elaborate cyber-scam in which hackers break into a company's phone system, then ring up international premium rate calls.

Womble Carlyle attorney Mark Palchick has been at the forefront of combatting this crime. In 2014, Palchick represented an Atlanta architectural firm whose telecom system had been hacked and toll pumped for $166,000 in fraudulent charges.

Palchick has written a new article for the National Federation of Small Business (NFIB) outlining how toll pumping occurs and what small businesses can do to safeguard their telecom systems from it.
