A U.S. record company has filed a suit against the U.S. venture capital firm that invested in a Vietnamese entertainment portal, which the record company alleges made its songs available for free download.

The record company alleges that the Vietnamese site made 3,000 of its songs available on its website, which offers free downloads as a way to drive traffic and generate revenue through advertisements.

"Just because you can fund it, it doesn't mean you escape the consequences of an infringing business," said Ryan Becker, an attorney representing the plaintiff.

The suit is seeking damages of $150,000 per infringement on the site, which could mean a maximum of 3,000 times that amount if a judge rules in the record company's favor.
