The Stroudsburg Area School Board is seeking assistance from a state-appointed fact-finder to settle contract negotiations with the teachers union. According to Jeffrey Sultanik, chief negotiator representing the school board, the district and its state mediator have "exhausted all means" in their attempts to convince the Stroudsburg Area Education Association to make the necessary concessions to preserve the fiscal sustainability of the district.
"We believe that the association's expectations are unrealistic in light of the district's ability to pay and the current economic conditions," Sultanik said.
Even if the union were to agree to a six-year contract that did not include raises for the length of the agreement, the salaries of union members would still be ahead of what other districts pay their teachers, Sultanik said.
