Travelers on non-stop flights to the United States should expect additional delays as they will be subject to further security interviews as part of new check-in protocols implemented by the Trump Administration.
As of October 26, 2017, US-bound travelers should anticipate being interviewed at the check-in counters or at the gate before boarding the plane. This new security measure will also affect domestic flights, as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will perform a more thorough inspection of luggage and travelers may be prevented from checking in luggage curbside at the airport.
Earlier this year, the Administration had previously placed a ban on electronic devices larger than a cell phone including laptops in carry-on luggage from flights originating from ten Muslim majority countries. Even though that ban was lifted, it did result in the TSA requiring additional screening of carry-on items on flights, which include electronics larger than cell phones such as tablets. Laptops had previously been subject to X-ray screening by the TSA and travelers were required to place such items in a separate bin for inspection.
The screening interviews and new check-in requirements were implemented as part of the Trump administration's purported goal of deterring terrorism and are said to be designed to strengthen aviation security and increase safety measures put in place to prevent possible terrorist attacks.
