Jason Sapsin was featured in the NutraIngredients-USA article "Panel of Experts Proposes Monograph System to Regulate Probiotics Claims in U.S." While the full text can be found in the October 22, 2013 issue of NutraIngredients-USA, a synopsis is noted below.

A group coordinated out of the University of Maryland wrote a paper proposing significant changes to the way probiotics are regulated, including the use of a monograph system similar to what regulators in Canada use to govern the use of the organisms.

Changing the course of FDA regulation is a daunting task and the ideas raised in the paper should be seen as a starting point for discussion.

"It's interesting to see people grappling with the question of what level of substantiation is necessary before a claim can be made for a dietary supplement or a food. I think that's a perennial issue," said Sapsin. "The first thing that comes to mind is whether that is practical given FDA's resources at the moment."
