Collecting capital from several angel investor groups, a process known syndication, is changing the venture capital game, according to some in the industry.

For most, syndicated partnerships are relatively loose, said Jeffrey Nicholas. Some groups formalize the agreement with a treaty or sorts, but Nicholas said such treaties often read like a version of the Golden Rule.

"You assume that if they're putting their money into it, they're not leaping into it without having looked under the hood. But still, you're trusting that they did look under the hood," Nicholas said.
