Those who missed the seminar can still catch all the presentations, including an informative discussion about preventing piracy of TV programming.

During Hughes Hubbard's 5th annual Latin America seminar in South Florida, a guest speaker on the international trade panel donned a pirate costume and stole the show.

Wearing an eye patch, a black tri-cornered hat and a hook on his hand, Jose Sariego, senior vice president and general counsel of HBO Latin America, used the costume as a jumping off point to discuss HBO's piracy problem in the Bahamas.

"We'd been beating our heads up against the wall for more than a decade to get rid of this thing," he said. "And it was still there, right off shore, laughing in our face, stealing the signal." Fortunately, HBO was able to stop the pirating of its programming with assistance from Hughes Hubbard, Sariego said.

"I came here two years ago to this seminar very frustrated, and I heard [Hughes Hubbard attorney] Ken [Pierce] speak," Sariego said. "The next thing we know, they call an all-hands meeting in Nassau, which to this day is the most amazing meeting I ever attended ... Ken did a great job of pushing the right buttons at the right time and getting us in front of the right people."

This year's seminar, "Profiting from the Global Economy in Latin America," was held March 17 at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Florida. Sariego's discussion was just one of the seminar's many highlights. If you missed it, you can watch a video of the entire seminar, which is posted to our Web site. The video features panelists discussing such timely topics as the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and anti-corruption enforcement, international antitrust and competition policy, international trade and market access, financial transactions and corporate joint ventures in this region.
