Medium and heavy duty trucks ranging from school buses to dump trucks will have to meet tightened greenhouse gas emission standards and fuel economy standards under new regulations issued by the Obama administration. The Environmental Protection Agency and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration jointly issued a final rule which is to be phased in through 2027. The final rule (RIN:2060-AS16; RIN:2127-AL52) is estimated to result in approximately 10% more greenhouse gas reductions than the current rule. Medium and heavy duty vehicles currently account for approximately 25% of greenhouse emissions in the U.S. transportation sector. Once fully implemented, the new rule will result in model year 2027 vehicles that are 25% more fuel efficient than models produced in 2018. Covered under the regulation is everything from big rigs, passenger vans, truck trailers and passenger buses.
