The Federal Trade Commission is proposing to repeal its Picture Tube Rule.

The Rule, which is formally known as the "Trade Regulation Rule Concerning the Deceptive Advertising as to Sizes of Viewable Pictures Shown by Television Receiving Sets," was issued decades ago to prevent deceptive advertising claims about the size of television screens.  The Rule currently requires marketers to base claims about screen size on the horizontal measurement of the actual, viewable picture area, unless an alternative basis for the measurement is disclosed.

The FTC will be accepting public comments on its proposal until May 14, 2018.
