Federal Trade Commission Chair Joseph Simons appointed four new members to the FTC leadership team. Andrew Smith will serve as Director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection; D. Bruce Hoffman will serve as Director of the Bureau of Competition; Bruce H. Kobayashi will serve as Director of the Bureau of Economics; and Alden Abbott now serves as General Counsel.

Mr. Smith was previously a partner and co-chair of the financial services practice at Covington & Burling. He chairs the American Bar Association Consumer Financial Services Committee, and worked for the FTC as lead staffer when the agency enacted the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act.

Mr. Hoffman had served as Acting Director of the Bureau of Competition since August 2017. He previously served as the Bureau of Competition Deputy Director and Associate Director for Regional Litigation.

Mr. Kobayashi was a professor and Associate Dean for Research and Practice Development at the George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School. He previously served as a senior economist in the FTC Division of Policy Analysis.

Mr. Abbott had been serving as Acting General Counsel since April 2018.
