In advance of the European elections to be held in May, Facebook announced additional rules concerning political advertising on the platform.

These additional rules will require advertisers of "political" topics, defined differently in each country, to prove that the advertiser lives in the country targeted by the ad in question by providing verifiable contact information.

The rules will require advertisers to provide a phone number or email address corresponding to the company or organization paying for the political ad, which will be made available to the public.  Advertisers acting in a personal capacity will be required to publish his or her full name with the political ad.

Facebook has said that these rules will be rolled out to the United States as well.
