The Maltese government has withdrawn its Request for Opinion from the European Court of Justice (ECJ) on the definition of "illegal sports betting" in the Council of Europe's Convention on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions.

Adopted in July last year, the Convention is designed to tackle match-fixing and combat the growth of illegal sports betting. Its ultimate aim is to "prevent, detect, punish and discipline" the manipulation of sporting competitions, as well as enhancing cooperation and the exchange of information between national and international authorities, sporting organisations and betting operators.
