On 18 February 2021, the South African Minister of Home Affairs published a new draft critical skills list, along with a technical report, specifying the referred requirements for those seeking to work and live in the country. The critical skills list has not been updated since 2014.
The revised list will have significant implications for companies operating in skills shortage areas. Although a number of new skills shortage areas have been included, such as those in the information technology, engineering and accounting industries, various skills shortage areas identified in the 2014 list have been omitted from the revised list.

Interested parties are invited to submit written comments on the technical report by 16h00 on 31 March 2021. It is expected that the finalised new critical skills list will be gazetted shortly thereafter.
ENSafrica will be submitting feedback on the list to the department, and we invite you to let us have, by 10 March 2021, your comments and recommendations in relation to the draft critical skills list and, in particular, in respect of professions or industries that are not adequately provided for in the draft critical skill list.
