Harneys is pleased to report the appointment of the Hon Sir Bernard Eder QC to the BVI Commercial Court, as Commercial Court Judge, from 13 June to 10 July. Justice Eder's distinguished career as a barrister, Judge and arbitrator has spanned nearly 40 years. Justice Eder sat as a High Court Judge between 2011 and 2015 and is also an International Judge of the Singapore International Commercial Court.

Andrew Thorp, head of Harneys' BVI Litigation practice, commented: "This is another welcome development for the BVI, giving its flagship Commercial Court very substantive judicial depth and increased ability to deal with the most complex cases efficiently and effectively."

The BVI Commercial Court is a division of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court and specialises in cross-border and high value commercial, company, trusts and insolvency law matters. Since opening the BVI Commercial Court in May 2009, the volume of commercial litigation and insolvency has increased in the BVI. The Court has dealt with numerous cases since its inception and continues to play an important role in the BVI's development of its financial services sector.

Justice Eder succeeds Justice Sher QC whose temporary appointment as Commercial Court Judge in the BVI Commercial Court ends on 10 June. Justice Eder will sit alongside Commercial Court Justice Wallbank.

Harneys' BVI litigation practice has acted on the majority of all large scale commercial dispute and insolvency cases before the BVI Commercial Court. The firm's global litigation practice also comprises teams in Bermuda, Cayman, London, Hong Kong and Cyprus.
