The Austrian tool manufacturer Plansee has announced the development of a new metal alloy ð dubbed þ-TiAl (for gamma titanium-aluminum) that is distinguished by its extreme lightness and heat resistance up to 850°C (1562°F). -TiAl alloys are 15 percent lighter than titanium alloys and are half the weight of super-alloys. The favorable characteristics of gamma titanium-aluminum make it possible to construct jet engine parts and engine components.

With 90 percent of its products bound for foreign markets and ATS 4.1 billion (US$ 328 million) in sales, the innovative company is one of Austria's leading exporters ð not to mention one of the world's top performers in its specialty of manufacturing products and components through powder metallurgy. þ -TiAl demonstrates once again Austria´s emerging leadership in high-tech components.
