Austrians were top international performers in the natural sciences and mathematics: in biology, physics, and earth and environmental sciences, the young Austrians were number one in Europe and tied with the U.S. for third place behind Korea and Japan. Austrian pupils earned fifth place in math.

The international report also underscored the strength of Austria's public education system as a whole: the Alpine Republic is among the leaders in public investment in education, with per capita spending exceeded only by Switzerland and the U.S.
