On October 21, 2020, Ordinance 18 of the Ministry of Justice was published, resuming—as of November 3, 2020—the countdown toward certain immigration deadlines.

In adopting measures of protection in response to the COVID-19 public emergency, the Federal Police previously suspended certain immigration deadlines as of March 16, 2020.

The new ordinance establishes that the documents related to standard immigration procedures, including National Immigration Registry Cards (CRNM) expired since March 16, 2020, are still accepted and may be used for entry into Brazil and registration until March 16, 2021.

For expatriates in Brazil, the period of March 16, 2020, to November 03, 2020, shall not count toward the maximum period to stay in Brazil each year (counting from the entry into Brazil).

In regard to the temporary visa—which, since the enactment of the new Immigration Law (Law No. 13,445/2017), covers several purposes, such as work, study, medical treatment and family reunion—the residency authorization deadline will remain, counting from the day of entry into Brazil, regardless the day of registration. The temporary visa may be registered until March 16, 2021, or, in case of return to Brazil, within a deadline of 90 days counting from the date of re-entry.

Our team is available to provide more information about this ordinance.
