One of the Cyprus Tax Department's main current priorities is to streamline and modernise its processes and make it more convenient for taxpayers to deal with the department by facilitating electronic submission of tax returns and payments, so removing the need to visit a tax office.

Electronic submission of income tax and VAT returns is now mandatory and the department is undertaking a large-scale public information programme to help taxpayers make the change.

In time for the first self-assessment payments in respect of income tax for 2018, which are due before the end of July, the Tax Department has announced that it has reorganised and upgraded its content on the JCCsmart online payments portal to make it more user-friendly and facilitate online payment.

Tax payments which do not include interest or penalties may only be made via the JCCsmart website and only late payments, payments of revised self-assessments and payments of capital gains tax are to be made at tax offices.
