Barbados continues to be proactive in its efforts to contain COVID-19 and has rolled out its national vaccination programme in the fight against the virus.
Being one of the first independent Caribbean nations to do so, the country recently commenced the process of vaccinating its frontline workers to be followed by the most vulnerable persons across the population.
As the pandemic continues to impact countries globally, some countries have already started their vaccination drives or are in the process of starting, while some are securing vaccinations for their populations.
Barbados was able to secure 100,000 doses of the Oxford-Astra Zeneca (COVISHIELD) through a donation from the Government of India. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley thanked the people and Government of India for their generous donation and reported that she was currently in negotiations with that government to purchase another 100,000 doses.
In addition, Barbados expects to receive shortly another batch of vaccinations, as part of the World Health Organisation's COVAX programme, which is designed to accelerate the development and manufacture of COVID-19 vaccines and to guarantee fair and equitable access for every country in the world.
