This is further to our previous update on the Code on Social Security, 2019 (Draft Code) that the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India had circulated in September, 2019 for inputs from stakeholders and public.

The Union Cabinet approved the Draft Code on December 4, 2019. The Draft Code proposes to consolidate the labour laws pertaining to social security of workers and subsume 8 central labour laws, including the Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948; the Employees' Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952; the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961; and the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972. The Draft Code will need to be introduced and passed by both houses of the Parliament and receive the President's assent before becoming law.
