Redevelopment and modernization of the railway platforms in India is much needed. However, redevelopment and modernization of identified stations which up to now was only undertaken by the Government owned Indian Stations Development Corporation Limited (ISDCL) has not seen much success as the ISDCL has only succeeded in redeveloping only a few stations, and there was a need to redevelop many more stations in India to make the rail network in India more efficient and modern.

Therefore, a scheme has been finally approved by the Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister of India, whereby stations are proposed to be redeveloped and modernized through invitation of open bids from interested parties.

The redevelopment of railway stations shall be carried out on a 'as is where is' basis, through open invitation mode whereby interested parties can come up with their proposed designs and business ideas. Under the approved scheme, commercial development of real estate has also been contemplated and this will not only help modernize the railway stations in India which has been in dire need of modernization for a long time but will also open up major opportunities.

In the first phase of the redevelopment the A-1 and A category stations which are generally located in metro cities, other major cities, pilgrimage centers and other important tourist destinations across the country shall be redeveloped and modernized.
