In its drive to develop and promote Singapore as a leading Intellectual Property (IP) hub, the Singapore Government through the Ministry of Law is setting up an IP Academy for providing training in IP-related skills to enhance IP management in organizations and to complement the educational programs in the universities.

The IP Academy is set up with a view to affording a link between the various fields by applying academic knowledge into practical industry know-how, integrating legal, technical and management skills, as well as the development of schools of thoughts in controversial areas such as cloning. It is also intended to be a regional centre of IP learning, providing both basic and continuing training for IP practitioners, businesses and research organizations within and outside Singapore.

There are essentially 2 main features to the IP Academy:-

  1. Continuing IP education for IP practitioners, businesses and research organizations; and
  2. IP research programs

These programs are targetted at stakeholders of the IP industry ranging from service providers to IP owners and inventors, and the IP Academy has also drawn up tailor-made developmental programs to cater to the specific needs of these professionals of the various disciplines and some of the areas involved include:-

  1. patent drafting and interpretation of patent claims and specifications;
  2. exploitation of IP founded upon research and development
  3. IP valuation, negotiation, marketing and branding

With the recent bustle in the IP scene, Singapore looks set to position itself as an IP hub providing excellent IP management and exploitation services.
