The FTC and FDA jointly issued warning letters to seven companies who were advertising a number of products that they claimed were able to treat coronavirus. According to the FTC, the companies have no evidence to support the claims, and the FDA stated that there are currently no approved vaccines, drugs or investigational products available to treat the virus. The letters required the companies to notify the FTC within 48 hours of the specific actions taken to address the regulator’s concerns. Furthermore, both regulators said they would follow up with any company that failed to make sufficient corrections. So far, all seven companies have made changes to remove the unsupported claims from their advertising. However, both the FTC and FDA will continue to monitor social media, online marketplaces and incoming complaints to ensure that the fraudulent products are not marketed with the same claims under a different name or on another website.
