The global spread of Coronavirus Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has impacted international travel.

For companies that have employees overseas, it's important to understand travel restrictions that are in place, especially from the U.S. government.

NOTE: This is an actively evolving situation and we advise all companies and employees to check the latest government travel advisories before any travel.

Travel Advisories

The U.S. Department of State has issued Level 4 classifications to both China and Iran. As such, travelers should avoid all nonessential travel to those countries.

Similarly, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that travelers avoid all nonessential travel to both China and Iran.

President Trump recently issued a presidential proclamation suspending the entry of immigrants, nonimmigrants and all aliens physically in China in the 14 days preceding their attempted entry into the U.S. This proclamation excludes Hong Kong.

Only U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents and family members will be allowed to enter the U.S.

As such, there is a possibility that foreign nationals traveling to China in the coming days and weeks may not be able to come back to the U.S.

With regards to Iran, travel to and from the country was already difficult due to an existing travel ban. Even so, the administration put in place new restrictions. Non-Americans nor Iranians who have been in Iran in the past 14 days will not be able to enter the U.S.

Reconsider Travel to Italy and South Korea

The State Department has also issued Level 3 travel advisories for South Korea and Italy. Both countries are currently experiencing a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases.
