On 14 October, Ofgem published a summary of its proposals for
reform of the energy market. Its stated intention is to ensure
simpler tariffs and clearer bills so as to facilitate customer
switching. The proposals include:
- each supplier offering only one standard tariff for each
payment type;
- Ofgem setting the standing charge, such that the only variable
between the suppliers is the unit price;
- the publication of standardised price information; and
- fixed periods and protection from price increases for consumers
on more innovative deals.
